Victor Conte, the founder and president of the now-defunct Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative (BALCO), which was once at the center of a 2003 performance-enhancing drug scandal that implicated former MLB star Barry Bonds, among others, has died at the age of 75.
Conte’s Monday death was confirmed in an X social media post by SNAC System, also known as Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning, a nutrition supplement company that also offers boxing and sports training, which Conte started back in 2011.
Conte apparently died after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He had been undergoing treatment for the disease this year:
In response to the BALCO scandal, Conte pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to distribute steroids and money laundering in 2005. He later served four months in a federal prison.
